Academy Curriculum

There will be 3 phases within each training session envisioned to be 1 hour in length typically. The 3 phases of each training session will be the following:

  • Preparation (warm-up) – 1 player 1 ball - 15 minutes
  • Theme of practice: Orientation and Presentation - 20 minutes
  • Orientation (defining the problem and lesson
  • Presentation (identifying the solutions)
  • Cooperative demonstration
  • Competitive demonstration
  • Implementation (displaying in a game setting) - 25 minutes

These sessions will focus on a number of different topics and students will have checklist cards that will be filled out by their instructors as they master the topic. A sample beginning topic may be to “push pass with both feet.” This is an example of a technique-only element. As they master these skill topics, tactics and teamwork will become a bigger part of the instruction. Advanced topics will include participation of other players, such as in a “wall pass” or “overlap run”. This brings in the more advanced elements of tactics and teamwork to the technique of the push pass. As the student advances so does their technical competence in all the elements.

Demonstration of the more advanced elements by the instructors involving 2 or more players will include 2 stages – cooperative and competitive. The instructor will begin the topic in a cooperative phase. This means that the theme will be demonstrated where the opposing player will minimize the challenge to allow the skill to be successfully completed. This will allow the student to gain confidence and competence in the skill. Once the skill is acquired, the instructor will move the presentation into the competitive phase. This increases the challenge and allows the student to learn to use the skill successfully in a game situation. This is true whether the theme is a defensive or an offensive skill.

Academy instruction will focus on the following main topics:

  • Fundamental ball skills
  • Juggling and ball control
  • First Touch
  • Advanced ball skills
  • Defending
  • Finishing
  • Goalkeeping
  • Positional and situational understanding
  • Combination play
  • Rules and regulations of the game

These topics will be covered over a series of hour-long sessions several times a week throughout the 3-year course. These sessions will have specific themes that cover the individual focus topics. Advancement through the program will be based on mastery and understanding of these topics.
